Town Crier

From the President

On the 18th,19th, and 20th I made a visit to Reno Nv our 2012 reunion location. I visited the Ramada Reno Hotel and looked at the rooms we will be staying in, the hospitality room, and the 14th floor dining room where we will have a dinner. They have been renovating the hotel so the rooms were very nice. New furniture and mattresses, and very clean. They are completing the renovation before our arrival. Our room rate will be $59 plus tax and is available a couple of days before and after the actual reunion dates. Directions on how to make your reservations will come later. The Hotel also has a restaurant and casino. Smoking is allowed in the casinos, but when I went in to look at it I couldn’t tell as there was no smell. I quit smoking in 1971 and I could breath in there. The restaurant has plenty of seating and opens at 6:30 am. We have CD’s of the Decommissioning of the 35 and the Commissioning of the Truxtun. They will provide a CD player and TV for viewing them. Transportation will be provided to and from the airport which is not very far away. Transportation will also be provided to the downtown casinos. Contact phone number for hotel transportation will be provided later.

We visited Virginia City which is about 40 miles from Reno. The elevation is above 6000 ft and a real trip in a car. For those with walking impairments or are wheelchair bound, the sidewalks are wood and rough, not impassable but rough. There are ramps into the stores and to cross the streets. There are many shops and history there along with some good restaurants. We had lunch there and it was very good. It’s an old mining town and there are mines that can be visited.

The next day we visited Carson City and made arrangements for our first day (Friday) tour which is a train ride to Virginia City. I have a bid from ryans express to provide busses for our tours. The bus(s) will pick us up at the hotel, take us to Carson City where we will catch the train. The train will get to V City at about 11:00am. You will be free on your own to get lunch and to look at the shops until 3:00pm when the train will take you back to Carson City. I am working with the Train Co on group rates. At this time the cost will be about $23.00 per person. Seniors and vets get the same rates. The cost of transportation will be around $11.00 per person depending on the number of people. The buses will pick us up in CC and return us to the hotel.

On Saturday the busses will pick us up at the hotel, take us to Carson City where we will visit the old mint and the railroad museum. Lunch will be on your own and then we will be returned to Reno for a tour of the Automobile museum. We will return to the hotel around 4:00pm for our Assn meeting and election of officers for the next 2 years. That meeting will take place in the hospitality room.

The dinner will be at 7:00pm. I talked to the Catering Mgr about the menu and they are willing to do whatever we need to do. At the present time we will offer four choices for the dinner. Steak, Chicken, Fish, and Vegetarian. The cost will be about $25.00 per person depending on the current prices when we are there.

Final arrangements need to be made by July 2012 and we will keep the web site updated as necessary to keep you informed. SeeEvents Page regularly for updates to the details. You will be applying to attend on our web site. The dates for the reunion are -arrival on Thursday 04 October 2012, tours on Friday and Saturday. Dinner on Saturday night. Breakfast on Sunday morning with departure later in the day. We hope you will contact all your old Truxtun friends and make them aware of this reunion and attend. Everyone always has fun at these. We have had reunions since 2000 which was in San Diego. 2002 was in Philly. 2004 was in San Antonio. 2006 was in Bremerton. 2008 was in Charleston. 2010 was in Rapid City SD. As you can see they rotate from west to east coast and in the center of the US. We get new attendees at each one. Some of us have been to all. You should consider spending a couple of extra days in Reno. There is a lot to see and do there.

While in Wa visiting I made a contract to buy 144 new ball caps with the DLGN/CGN printing like we have now. I should have these in the next few weeks. 20 of them will have Plankowner on the back. Yes there are still some of us plank owners around. We have about 20 of the older hats still left. See the web site for purchase info.

We also have the CD’s of the Decom of the 35 and Comm of the new Truxtun for sale.

Looking forward to seeing you in Reno! Contact me via President@TruxtunAssn.org if you have any questions.
