DDG-103 Commissioning

Here is some updated news regarding the commissioning of the USS Truxtun DDG-103. This information should help you in planning your travel time, securing favorable airline ticket rates, and provide adequate time to schedule your time off with your employer.

Here in chronological order are the events taking place leading up to the commissioning ceremony of the USS Truxtun DDG-103 at 1100 hours on April 25th.

Monday, April 20th 2009
The Truxtun will be open for public visitation from 0800 to 1600 hours. Truxtun will be docked at The Cruise Ship Terminal's Union Pier in downtown Charleston which is at 32 Washington St. Note: From the map it appears Washington Street changes its name to Concord Street at the terminal.

Tuesday, April 21st 2009
The Truxtun will be open for public visitation from 0800 to 1200 hours. The ship will then depart the Cruise Ship Terminal in the afternoon and proceed up the river to the Naval Weapons Station (NWS) Wharf Alpha. Once berthed at the Naval Weapons Station the ship will no longer be open to the public (probably until the commissioning ceremony.)

Saturday, April 25th 2009
The commissioning ceremony will take place at the Naval Weapons Station (NWS), Wharf Aplha at 1100 hours. The ship will be selling items from the Ship's Store. I suspect there will be a reception at the Weapons Station after the commissioning and tours of the ship.

The Truxtun Association has reserved a block of 40 rooms from Wednesday, April 22nd until Friday, April 24th at the Clarion Inn in North Charleston. If you wish, you may come earlier or stay later as the rate will remain the same for your stay. When making reservations, insure you tell the front desk that you are a member of The Truxtun Association to receive the special Truxtun Association room rate of $69.00 plus tax. If you have trouble getting the $69.00 room rate ask for Julie in Sales. She will insure you get the special rate. Note: the cutoff date for reservations is April 10, 2009.
